What is Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?

The Earned Income Tax Credit or the EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families. Congress originally approved the tax credit legislation in 1975 in part to offset the burden of social security taxes and to provide an incentive to work. When the EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit.

To qualify, taxpayers must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if they did not earn enough money to be obligated to file a tax return.

Do I Qualify?

If your household income was less than $39,783* last year, you may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and qualify for free tax help at locations throughout Fresno County. This credit could increase your refund by up to $4,700*.

What do I bring?

• Social Security cards for each family member
• W-2 forms for all jobs worked last year
• All 1099 forms for other income
• Child care provider information: name, address, and Tax ID (if available)

Is there assistance available to file?

Each year millions of dollars in tax refunds are unclaimed in Fresno County. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, qualifying low-income households can have their taxes prepared and filed for no cost by volunteers. These volunteers are given high-quality tax preparation training by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
