In Fresno County, the Women's Initiative has taken on the challenge of tackling one of the region's most pressing concerns: substance abuse. This is a problem that cuts across all socio-economic categories. People who abuse prescription drugs admit they do so because these medications are readily available in their own homes, or in homes of people they know. When was the last time you thought to lock up your prescription drugs?
1. I will learn the facts regarding the most commonly abused prescription drugs and stay vigilant in building my awareness.
2. I will monitor the prescription drugs in my household, including how many pills are in each bottle, keeping track of refills, and controlling dosages and refills of teens and children in my home.
3. I will network with other adults in the community and makes sure my friends and relatives, especially grandparents or the elderly, are aware of the risks and monitor their own medications.
4. I will secure all prescription drugs in a safe locked place and encourage relatives and friends to do the same.
5. I will take inventory of all prescription drugs in my home regularly and discard expired or unused prescription drugs in the appropriate fashion.
6.I will NOT flush medications down the toilet, but WILL drop them off at an approved location or other acceptable fashion as described in the Pledge to Lock It Up Kit.
7. I will not abuse prescription drugs myself.
